The concept of “sweetness” is one that is oppressive to people, especially women. I strive to be polite, pleasant, hospitable, generous, but never sweet!
Sweet girls are submissive and inoffensive. Sweet girls never speak their minds. Sweet girls never contradict anyone. Sweet girls never question. Sweet girls never talk about anything more substantial than the weather or fashion or boyfriends. Sweet girls go to church. Sweet girls, if they have any brains, don’t show them. Sweet girls respect authority. Sweet girls speak softly. Sweet girls never get mad. Sweet girls are ladylike. Sweet girls do what their families tell them, even when they’re not girls anymore. Sweet girls get married. Sweet girls have babies. Sweet girls aren’t activists. Sweet girls aren’t political. Sweet girls don’t have opinions. Sweet girls don’t have personalities. Sweet girls don’t have emotions, except for the warm and fuzzy kind. Sweet girls sacrifice. Sweet girls exist only for others. Sweet girls have no self.

Hello,
I am trying to contact active atheists who would be interested in getting involved in a movement called The Renaissance Human. This is a liberal (naturally) Atheist group. I also started a corresponding online school to teach subject and focus on logic and reason and the creation of the Renaissance Human. Lack of knowledge and the ability to think critically helps religion (superstition) thrive.

I'm reading a book on the polygamist Warren Jeffs (currently in prison for child humping and marrying). In the book, "When Men Become Gods" the Mormon leaders are always telling the women to "stay sweet," even when being humiliated and beaten. "Stay sweet" is an attempt to make women robots with no thoughts feelings or emotions. Which is no way to live an be human if you ask me. Awesomeness.

You describe "sweetness" well. I think the mistake your grandmother made was a false dichotomy: that one is either sweet or arrogant. I doubt she would have applied the dichotomy to men, and yet women are at least as smart and capable as men. So why should smart women be arrogant and not smart men?
WOW! You have a very narrow definition of what sweet means! I've known the sweetest person I've ever met for 35 years now, and she'll not back down from a Grizzly!
She speaks her mind, stands her ground and stands up for what she believes...against anybody.
